What's wrong with Bacon?

Several days ago one of my friends posted on Facebook the benefits of eating bacon.  Let's all agree that stats can be made to say just about anything.  Of course there are benefits to just about any food; unfortunately there are also disadvantages.

Proponents of bacon declare that its high in protein, contains lots of vitamins, and can actually benefit your heart.

Let's start with protein
This vital nutrient is found almost everywhere.  Most of us consume more protein than we need and many should actually cut back.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says, while protein is essential, it should make up no more than 10% to 35% of your daily calories.   "The average American consumes about double the recommended amount of protein.  People need to know this and not go overboard", says Jim White of the Academy.

Bacon contains lots of vitamins
Phosphorus, Sodium, and Selenium are the three major vitamins provided in bacon.  There are also trace amounts of others such as Magnesium, Calcium, and Zinc.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient required for proper cell functioning, regulation of calcium, and for creating energy for our cells.  It is found in almost every food.  Deficiency is rare among Americans.  Conversely, too much phosphorous causes the body to send calcium from the bones to the blood which weakens bone mass.  Just three strips of bacon contain 12% of your dietary need for phosphorus.  In comparision, breakfast cereal has over 112%, candy bars have 70%, bread can have 50% of more..and the list goes on.

I believe this particular nutrient has been beat to death.  The simple fact sodium was actually used as a vitamin shows how flawed pro-bacon studies can be.  Nine out of 10 people ages 2 and older in the United States consume more than the recommended amount of sodium each day, says the Center for Disease Control.  Three slices of bacon is almost 25% of your entire daily need!

Being an essential trace mineral, your body must get this through the food you eat.  Small amounts of selenium are good for your health.  Its primary purpose is to aid in preventing cellular damage and work with the immune system to protect you after a vaccination.  The very best source of selenium are in plant foods, such as vegetables.  Meats are also high in selenium.  As with phosphorus, it is found in almost every food.

Can Bacon Benefit your Heart?
Proponents of bacon mention that because bacon contains Omega-3 fatty acids which have been linked to a healthier heart.  That's partially true.  Unfortunately, the bacon industry leaves out the evil Omega 6 which is the real killer if the ratio between Omega 3 and Omega 6 are high.

In a perfect world a 1 to 1 ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 would be beneficial.  High ratios (say, 10:1) combined with saturated fat have proven to cause all sorts of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.   The ratio in Western diets averages 15:1.  Bacon has a 22:1 ratio!

My Conclusion
What few benefits contained in bacon can be easily found in most of the foods we eat.  There is no beneficial reason to eat it and the high omega 3 to omega 6 ratios when combined with saturated fats  are actually harming our bodies.

Bacon, like many animal products, should be consumed in extreme moderation.  It is NOT healthy, and should be treated as such.

At breakfast, try a cup of fresh fruit as an alternative.  Fruit such as strawberries have close to a 1:1 ratio promoting healthy hearts and lowering overall pH in your blood.

Can We Kill Cancer Naturally?

One of the most interesting facts about this disease is the fact Cancer exists naturally in the body.  Cancer cells are in every single one of us.  Its up to the body and immune system to break those cells down and remove them from the body.

That might be a difficult task if the immune system is too busy fighting off the pollutants just from the food we eat instead of allowing the food we eat to help in the race for the real cure.

Total US Estimates for "treating" Cancer is over $210 billion dollars, with $13.9 billion going to Breast Cancer alone.

What causes cancer seems to be linked to the amount of animal products a person consumes more than family history.

Dr. Michael Greger, physician and internationally recognized speaker on public health issues says:

"For years we didn’t know why eating a plant-based diet appeared to so dramatically improve cancer defenses within just a matter of weeks. But researchers recently figured it out: eating healthy lowers the level of the cancer promoting growth hormone IGF-1."

"What is the mechanism by which a simple dietary change can alter the levels of this cancer promoter? Imagine you’re a kid with some tinker toys. Then for your next birthday you get one of those huge tinker toy sets dumped down in front of you. All excited with this new load of raw building materials, you may really start scaling up. Basically it’s the same with your liver and insulin-like growth factor 1.

When we dump a load of protein in our body, our liver’s like, “Whoa, look at all this! What are we going to do with it all? We can’t just waste it, we’ve got to do something with it!” So our liver starts pumping out IGF-1 to tell all the cells in our body “It’s growin’ time! Be fruitful and multiply. Spare no expense, go crazy—look how much excess protein we got to work with!

The problem is that some of the new additions spurred by this growth hormone may be tumors. When you’re a fully-grown adult, cell growth is something we want to slow down, not accelerate. The goal, therefore, would be to maintain adequate, but not excessive, overall protein intake."

He further went on to explain that the animal-based protein increased the IGF-1 levels while plant-based protein decreased them.

Dr. Colin T. Campbell, professor of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University, author of hundreds of peer reviewed research papers, director of the largest and most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted has this to say:

"The human consumption of any animal protein advances the progress of a host of western diseases, from the various forms of cancers to heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis; Alzheimer’s and even some autoimmune diseases."

He found that there is a direct link between the consumption of animal protein and the failing health and prevalent disease that is the everyday truth of so many people around the world.

One of his experiments involved two groups of normal laboratory rats.  The first were given a diet consisting of 20% animal protein and the second were given a diet consisting of 5% animal protein.

All the rats that were on the 20% developed liver cancer and died.

All the rats on the 5% animal protein diet DEVELOPED NO CANCERS and lived out their lives normally.

Dr. Campbell then adjusted the animal protein in the healthy group and found he could "turn on" and "turn off" cancer cells based on the amount of protein.  It seems about 0-5% has not bearing, and anything over 5% begins turning on cancer cells.

To further his findings, Dr. Campbell went to China in the early 1970's to visit the premier of China who was dying of cancer.  He initiated a nationwide survey to collect information about the disease.

The collected mass amounts of cancer information and which parts of China it was prevalent and where it was nonexistent.

Dr. Campbell and his team of researchers from the University of Oxford used the map to gather enormous amounts of information.

The study lasted twenty years and is the most comprehensive study of its kind anywhere on the planet.

Their findings, as reported in the "New York Times", were massive!

The areas of China that had the most cancer also had the highest amounts of animal protein consumption.  The areas of rural China where plant foods remained dominant were almost cancer free.  Those areas were also free of most other western diseases such as diabetes, hart attacks, autoimmune, etc.

Animal products produce 100% of the Cholesterol you intake, all of the bad fats, and even carciogenics from cooking the beef.  The end result is a sick, very acidic body which is a spawning ground for chronic disease.

There is plenty of research showing the link between acidic pH and cancer. Cancer thrives in an acidic environment, and doesn't survive in an normal, more alkaline environment. Cancer cells make your body even more acidic as they produce lactic acid. So if you have cancer, your pH levels are low and your body is too acidic.

Taking action to make your body more alkaline is vital in the battle against cancer.

Hippocrates – the father of medicine – stated, “Let your food be your medicine, and let your medicine be your food.”

If you eat meats, dairy, and processed food in abundance, your body will become very acidic and most likely develop a life-threatening disease.

Eating a whole-grain plant-based diet allows your body to achieve a state of alkaline wellness; makes it virtually impossible for Cancer to grow, and allowing a strengthened immune system to remove the existing cancers.

Our body want to be healthy.  It wants to be in a state of good health.  Every time we eat food that is not in harmony with our body it has to work harder to break it down and dispose of it.  Poor food choice also limits the very micro-nutrients our bodies need to stay in good health.  Without them we can never achieve the best possible healthy state.

When our body is full of junk it spends almost all its time purging it.  Therefore, it spends much less time healing and fighting off emerging cancer cells, viruses, bacteria, etc..  When its fed a natural whole-grain plant-based diet, the body is refreshed with nutrients that it uses as "fuel" to repair and keep the body at its utmost healthy state.

Just being Vegan doesn't mean you'll have these same results.  Vegans can eat Oreo cookies, many processed foods, and other junk that is causing some of the problems we face in today's society.

However, a diet that is high in organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and seeds significantly reduces the risk for cancers and heart-related illnesses.

In closing, I have switched to a similar diet several months ago.  I have lost 8 pounds without even trying.  My sinus issues are gone, no gout or ear infections, my skin looks much cleaner.  People ask what I did -- how did I get to look younger?  I eat all day long... never starving...never worry about counting calories.  It works -- I'm proof.
